Event Type

This 110 year old railway line was built in order to carry coal from Pukemiro to Huntly, before closing in 1973. We meet at 10 on 1 February at The Point, in Ngaruawahia, at the end of Bandstand Rd, off Lower Waikato Esplanade. This is where the big awa of the region, the Waipa and the Waikato, meet. There is plenty of parking and public toilets.

From there we will depart around 10.15 to Pukemiro Junction, our starting point for the train ride. We will travel via Waingaro Rd and then Rotowaro Rd. Nice sealed and scenic roads, a trip of around 25 minutes. Tickets will be purchased on site for those who want a ride, $10 per person.

After the ride we will continue on Rotowaro Rd towards Huntly. A brief stop by Tainui Bridge for a photo opportunity, before returning to Ngaruawahia for lunch via Riverview Rd. Lunch is at Breaking Bread Café on Great South Rd cnr of Newcastle St. Plenty of angle parking on Newcastle St.

All branches invited as usual.

Please RSVP to Daniel for café numbers ([email protected]).
