Importing 2CVs into New Zealand

The following applies to 2CVs and derivatives that were NOT first registered in New Zealand prior to 1991 and do not have three point seat belts fitted in the rear.

To clarify –  2CVs and derivatives that were first registered in New Zealand prior to 1991 have an exemption for the lack of three point seat belts in the rear seats as covered below:

While the VIRM has some exemptions, they were only applicable to vehicles first registered in NZ before 1/1/1991 (before we had the standards regime we now have in place).

From the VIRM:

The following exemptions are applicable only to vehicles first registered in New Zealand before 1 January 1991:

Citroen 2CV: Exemption code R1

 Seating positions behind the driver

R1: All seatbelts may be approved lap belts.

For 2CVs and derivatives that are first registered in New Zealand after the 1st January 1991, this exemption does NOT apply!    While the owners have the right to apply for an exemption from the requirements in the rule, in this case it is NOT likely to be granted as other 2CVs in NZ have had seatbelt anchorages retrofitted.

Therefore, all 2CVs and derivatives imported and first registered in New Zealand after 1st January 1991 MUST have anchorages for three point seat belts retrofit by engaging a Low Volume Vehicle Specialist Certifier.
