In April of this year the Great War Exhibition at the Dominion Museum Building added a Trench Experience, which is a guided tour of a trench environment:

“Live moment to moment, as the ANZAC troops did in the trenches at Gallipoli, only a bomb’s throw away from the Turks. In this unique re-creation of Quinn’s Post, encounter the noise, the explosions, the stench, the confined environment those men had to deal with during the ferocious struggle between opposing forces. At times confronting, this will be an experience like no other!”

Tour Options

There are three tour options built around the Trench Experience, with discounted prices for GWCCC:

  1. Trench Experience only. $15 per person
  2. Self-guided entry into the main Exhibition space and a Trench Experience.   $25.00pp
  3.  Fully guided tour of the main Exhibition space and a Trench Experience. $34.00pp

The organisers offer the following advice for the Trench Experience

  • Sections of the experience are constricted in height and width (ceiling heights drop to 1600mm with narrow passages of 700mm).
  • There are 23 steps within the experience and the ground is uneven. Care must be taken and low-heeled footwear must be worn. There is no wheelchair access, nor are there handrails.
  • Theatrical lighting and loud sounds are used.
  • There is ‘minor’ use of offensive language (probably as expected by Kiwi soldiers).
